Hi my name is Andrew, I was diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome in kindergarten. My father was a drug addict who was physically, mentally, and verbally abusive to both my mother and I. Neither of my parents knew what to do with me, so my mother kept putting me in and out of mental institutions to try to figure out what was wrong with me resulting in constant confusion. There were times that she told me I was going to school and then as soon I'd see my transportation arrive, my mother would get out and tell them I wasn't going and I'd end up in the hospital after screaming and crying "no mommy I don't wanna go!" Special is important to me because it gives me a voice to speak against the people who have hurt me throughout my life. When I was 15 years old, I moved in with my father because my mother and her current husband didn't want to deal with my problems. at that time my father got clean from the drugs but he was no different, how could he be normal when he himself was abused by his father. I was always being taken off and put on different pills to try to make me "normal" to function in society. I currently have ptsd, asd, and other issues but that doesn't change who I am. Currently I have the support of my Fiancé and our amazing friend John who understands and I'm on my way to learning to live with these issues and getting the right care, every day is a struggle but I still have a long way to go with counseling and support from medical professionals.
