My name is Sky Michaels, I am a 48-year-old transgender female. I was aware of my internal gender differences when I was 8 years old, resulting in confusion for me. However, I did have a very supportive mother at such a young age, allowing me to dress in my sisters clothing, yet always had me refrain from wearing the clothing and appearing feminine when going to school, as we were living in a not so safe area near Los Angeles California. But also out of concern for my safety from bullying by fellow students. Since about 1980 I had always dealt with not not being my true self. I have continued the process of fully embracing myself as a woman starting hormone therapy by having Glottopasty in October 2019, breast augmentation surgery in November 2019, and had additional surgeries and procedures related to facial implantation, augmentation and hair removal to feminize my features. In order to support myself mentally and emotionally, I have made every effort to read about and watch educational videos on the gender reassignment surgeries. I maintain a very close circle of transgender friends (including my roommate) that I can be very open with, I do attend transgender support groups weekly and includes my very loving and Supporting fiancé Andrew who I plan to marry in May of 2021. I do have ongoing struggles with Anxiety that are a result of when going to the bathroom or being out in a public gym. Every day I go to great lengths to minimize my 'male parts' being viewable by others. Once I have my vaginoplasty In August this year I'm most certain that most anxieties related to gender dysphoria will be diminished. I am starting to work with a voice coach this coming week and excited that I am a good candidate for vocal chord surgery to soften my voice.
My hope and desire is to help other transgender women in finding the right care and support to help them along in their journey.
